The Heart of a L i O N.
Darkness was the only thing that could be seen behind the eyes of a sleeping young lion. Unless a dream had occured. A bright light shined in the dimly lit cave and awoke a cute, little lion cub. Shika was his name and he was about the size of your average house cat, jumped awake. He skipped around the den, excited for the start of a new day. He ran outside, waiting for his parents to awaken and getting a breath of fresh air.
The bright beams of the sun flooded the valley with light and warmth. A light breeze made it even more relaxing. The breeze gently tugged at his fur and he sighed blissfully and closed his emerald colored oculars.
"Shika!"
A lovely, bell-like voice chimed and Shika's eyes tore open and he spotted his friend trotting towards him, a smile on her face.
"Hey, Kesari!" He returned her smile and decided that today, perhaps, would be a good one for and adventure of some sort.
"We should go exploring!" He crouched down, his back end sticking in the air and a plafully determined look on his face.
A sad expression had crossed the visage of Kesari and the glow in her pretty blue eyes had faded. He suddenly got a feeling of foreboding.
"What's wrong, Kesari?"
"Well, my father says we aren't allowed to see each other anymore..."
A look of shock combinded with sorrow came upon his once happy face.
"B-but why? We're best friends! He can't keep us apart!"
"He says you and your family are nobodies and that I shouldn't hang around low-lives."
He began to speak, but then silenced himself, but a thought popped into his head.
"Well, you dad doesn't have to know!"
She glanced up at him with wide, teary blue eyes.
"Let's go to the jungle. He'll never know that we were together! Tell him you made new friends and that you were with them the whole time."
"O-okay, but if he finds out, I'm not allowed to leave the den ever again, or at least until I'm old enough."
"Alright! Don't worry! Let's go!"
He broke into a run and bounded through the tall grass til he came to the border between the savannah and the jungle. He had never really been this close to the jungle and the large capacity of it had frightened him a little, but he would not let it phase him. He slowly made his way inside of the thick green undergrowth and once he was on the other side, it was as if he had entered a whole new world. He glanced around, amazement in his eyes. He glanced back at Kesari and she too had the same look that was on his own face.
They could clearly hear the noises of the jungle. A howler monkey screeching. A parrot singing. The sound of an elephant in the distance, and perhaps the roar of a tiger. Tigers were the biggest of the cats. Bigger than lions, or at least that's what Shika's father had told him. He glanced back at Kesari again to make sure she was okay. She was pawing at a briar that was stuck to her pale orange-yellow fur.
"I don't like this place, Shika..." she complained.
"Well, let's keep exploring. We might find something amazing!"
He began walking at a regular pace but suddenly something jumped down out of the trees right in front of them. It was a crimson and white colored animal with a long ringed tail.
"Uhm, hi. Who are you...?" Inquired Shika.
"Oh, sorry. Didn't mean to drop in on ya. My name is Vermilion! I'm a red panda."
To be continued...
